November at Cinema Akil

INDEPENDENT FILMS. EVERY NIGHT.

We’re back again with yet another packed release slate of exclusives for November, premiering Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Cannes Palme d’Or-conquering masterpiece SHOPLIFTERS alongside its contender Russian rock musical LETO and the 2017 C.I.C.A.E Award winner THE RIDER by Chloe Zhao. From the MENA landscape, we will be hosting a special screening of the Jordanian documentary 17 followed by a Q&A with director Widad Shafakoj, and we bring back Karim Moussaoui’s UNTIL THE BIRDS RETURN taking us to the heart of current day Algeria.

Our first singalong kicks off our Wednesday Specials for November with everyone’s favorite musical cult classic GREASE starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. Specials will bring you the 1966 Senegalese classic BLACK GIRL, critically-acclaimed Iranian horror film FISH & CAT and we spend the Mawlid Al-Nabi holiday with Moustapha Akkad’s timeless epic THE MESSAGE, restored in 4K.

Cinemini is finally here with weekend shows just for the little ones! The new 11am weekend morning slot begins with the awaited Mexican animated film ANA & BRUNO and the much-loved Studio Ghibli wonder PONYO by Hayao Miyazaki. Both films are showing in their English-language dubbed versions.

We will be hosting a special public presentation of the Korean Film Festival 2018 Dubai edition co-presented by the Korea-Arab Society and in collaboration with the Korean Cultural Center  presenting three award-winning contemporary Korean films: THE FORTRESS (남한산성) and LITTLE FOREST (리틀 포레스트) and a special Cinemini KFF presentation of animated feature film THE SHOWER (소나기). All KFF films are in Korean subtitled in English.
