Vogue Arabia: Cinema Akil Brings an Audrey Hepburn Double-Bill to Dubai
Market OTB in Downtown Dubai is about to go on a reverie of classic Hollywood glamour with Cinema Akil’s double-bill screenings of two Audrey Hepburn classics, Funny Face and Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The 10-day program sees the two films aired underneath the stars, from January 19 until January 28.
Audrey Hepburn’s filmography is undeniably impressive, boasting a roll call of over 28 films; she is best known for Breakfast at Tiffany’s, beloved by audiences the world over. Not only did the film make it perfectly acceptable to eat breakfast whilst window shopping on Fifth Avenue, Holly Golightly’s wardrobe of little black dresses, chi-chi hats, and Oliver Goldsmith sunglasses (note that they are not Ray-Bans) defined zero-effort glamour for generations to come.
Before settling into your seats at Market OTB, brush up on your cinematic IQ. Hubert de Givenchy designed the scene-stealing black satin dress for the 1961 rom-com, which later auctioned at Christie’s for over $900,000 after Hepburn’s death. By demand, Oliver Goldsmith’s Manhattan sunglasses were re-released on the 50th anniversary of the film, primed for urban strolls (Danish pastry optional). Take a tour of the world of modeling and glossy publishing via director Stanley Donen’s Funny Face. Hepburn plays a bookstore clerk who becomes a model after meeting magazine editors Maggie Prescott (Kay Thompson) and Dick Avery (Fred Astaire). With its Gershwin musical score, deftly-styled costumes, and tongue-in-cheek approach to the world of modeling, this is a must-see for style aficionados.
Launched in 2014, Cinema Akil has rolled out over thirty popup events across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah, bringing a dose of big screen culture to the region. No stranger to the concept, Market Outside the Box sees its fourth edition of outdoorsy cinema-going as part of the Dubai Shopping Festival 2017.
