Cinema Akil and Sole DXB proudly join forces again this year to present a special program on the power of women and word in defining the hip hop universe as we know it today. Join us for the world premiere of WORD IS BOND the latest documentary by multi-award-winning director Sacha Jenkins which examines the transformative power of lyrics in the world of Hip-Hop music, exploring the many dimensions that hip-hop poetics from Nas to Rapsody to Tech9 occupy.
With women at the forefront of this year’s edition of Sole DXB; the film program will open with a special screening of MY MIC SOUNDS NICE: A TRUTH ABOUT WOMEN IN HIP HOP by Academy Award nominee Ava DuVernay which explores the history and the legacy of the women emcees during the heyday of Hip-Hop and the pioneers like Roxanne Shanté to MC Lyte to Queen Latifah who helped invent and nurture the genre.
