The inspirational and uplifting story of Hissa Hilal, a Saudi Arabian housewife who entered a high-profile poetry competition on TV, ‘Million’s Poet’. It’s the Arab world’s biggest poetry competition and in a part of the world where poetry is very much a live and thriving art form, competition is intense. Facing down a barrage of predominantly male rivals, self-taught poet Hissa not only makes it through to the finals, but declaims a poem of female empowerment and emancipation.
Under the imminent threat of Lebanon’s garbage crisis, Hala, a wild child inside a woman is the only one to refuse evacuation, clinging to whatever remains of home. The film was an Official Selection at the 69th Cannes Film Festival’s Cinefondation Competition. Submarine also won the Special Jury Prize in the Muhr Short Competition at the Dubai International Film Festival.
